With the 190 model series, Mercedes-Benz had an ideal technical foundation in light of the brand's reawakening sports spirit in the early 1980s. The 2.3-liter enlarged four-cylinder of the new sports model received, among other improvements, a performance-enhancing four-valve cylinder head. Some plastic components, including a striking rear spoiler and a sporty interior, rounded off the unusually attractive package by Mercedes-Benz standards.
The 2.3-16 and the subsequent sporty variants of the 190E gave the brand - not least through their later appearances in the booming German Touring Car Championship (DTM) - an enormous boost to its image.
